Nikita Barkhatov breaks down Topuria vs. Gaethje, favors Topuria

MMA Series double champion Nikita Barkhatov has shared his expectations for the upcoming bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje. According to the Russian fighter, Topuria enters the matchup as the favorite.

Barkhatov said he has great respect for Gaethje and considers him one of the most entertaining fighters in the UFC. However, he pointed to the number of grueling fights the American has been through over the course of his career.

“I really like Justin Gaethje as a fighter, and I enjoy watching his fights,” Barkhatov said. “But in this matchup, I think Topuria wins. Gaethje has been through so many wars that it feels like Topuria hasn’t taken as much damage in his entire career as Justin has absorbed. I think that could play a major role.”

Barkhatov added that much will depend on Gaethje’s game plan. If the American chooses to turn the fight into a brawl from the opening minutes, the bout could end quickly.

“If Gaethje starts trading from the first round, it could be over very quickly — even in the first round,” Barkhatov said. “But if he fights smart and sticks to a clear plan, he has every chance to win. I’d put it at 65-35 in favor of Topuria.”

Topuria vs. Gaethje will headline UFC Freedom 250 at the White House in Washington, D.C. The main card is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
